As Ghana prepares to host the African Senior Athletics Championship for the first time, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has contributed to national preparations through the technical expertise of its Director of Sports, Dr. Timothy Kwabena Mensah.
Dr. Mensah was among key facilitators in a four-day Level One refresher course that trained 70 technical athletics officials in Accra ahead of the continental event, scheduled for May 2026.
The training programme, organised as part of preparations for the championship, focused on equipping officials with current international standards, officiating protocols and decision-making skills required for high-level competitions.
During his sessions, Dr. Mensah led practical field-based exercises and simulation drills designed to strengthen consistency and accuracy in officiating. Participants were taken through real-time scenarios to improve their judgement under competition conditions.
He worked alongside other national resource persons, including Cynthia Wise, reinforcing both the theoretical and applied aspects of athletics officiating.
The course combined classroom instruction with hands-on training, ensuring that officials are well prepared to manage the technical demands of the championship, which is expected to attract top athletes from across Africa.
For KNUST, the involvement of its Sports Directorate in such a high-profile national assignment reflects the University’s growing contribution to sports development and technical capacity building in Ghana.
The African Senior Athletics Championship, dubbed “Accra 2026”, will open on May 12 at the Legon Sports Stadium, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s sporting history.
